Psalms 45:17
I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations: therefore shall the people praise thee for ever and ever.
Psalms 45:17 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 45 is a royal wedding song from the sons of Korah. It honors an earthly king and his bride. In the closing verse, the psalmist promises that the king’s name will be remembered in every generation, and because of this, the peoples will praise him forever. The verse ends the psalm with a note of lasting honor.
Meaning
In biblical thought, a name represents a person’s character, reputation, and legacy. To make a name remembered means that the person’s influence continues long after his life. Here, God Himself ensures the king’s renown. The psalmist also takes part in this promise by writing the psalm, so the king’s memory is preserved through the very words we read today.
The result is that “the people“—the nations—will praise the king forever. This is not short-lived fame but an unending response of praise. The verse shows that God is actively involved in the king’s destiny, and the king’s glory reflects God’s own glory.
Biblical connections
Christians have long seen this psalm as pointing to the Messiah. In Psalm 45:6, the king is addressed as God, so the promise of a remembered name finds its fullest meaning in Jesus Christ, whose name is praised across all nations and generations. The psalmist’s role in preserving the king’s memory parallels how Scripture preserves the name and work of Christ for all time.
Application
Believers can trust that God remembers His faithful servants. Just as He promised to preserve the king’s name, He will not forget those who serve Him. We are called to live in a way that honors God, leaving a legacy that points others to Him.
We also share in the psalmist’s work. By telling others about Christ and living faithfully, we help make His name known to future generations. The eternal praise in this verse reminds us that our worship is not limited to this life but continues forever.
Reflection
How can you help ensure that Christ’s name is remembered in your family, church, or community? The promise of everlasting praise is grounded in the worthiness of the One whose name we carry. Because He is worthy, His praise will never cease.
