There is a riuer, the streames wherof shall make glad the citie of God: the holy place of the Tabernacles of the most High. Psalms 46:4 (KJV)

Psalm 46:4 belongs to a well‑known psalm attributed to the Sons of Korah. The psalm opens with a declaration that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). Throughout the composition the psalmist affirms the assurance and security found in God’s presence, even amid tumultuous circumstances.

In verse 4 the psalmist uses the image of a river whose streams make glad the city of God. The river is a metaphor for God’s abundant grace, blessings, and life‑giving presence. Its streams emphasize a continuous supply of God’s goodness that reaches every part of the city. Just as a river sustains the land it flows through, God’s provision brings joy, contentment and abundance to His people.

The “city of God” can be understood historically as Jerusalem, the chosen dwelling place of the Almighty. It is also applied metaphorically to the spiritual community of believers—the Church—or to the collective body of God’s people. Thus the verse speaks both of a physical sanctuary and of the broader fellowship of those who trust in Him.

The phrase “the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High” points to the tabernacle, the portable sanctuary that symbolized God’s presence among the Israelites in the wilderness. The holy place represents the sacred dwelling where God’s glory abides. In a broader, New‑Testament sense this can allude to the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of believers, who are described as the temple of God (1 Cor 6:19).

Application: Psalm 46:4 encourages believers to find comfort, joy and satisfaction in God’s provision and presence. Like a river that refreshes and sustains, God’s blessings are available to all who seek Him. As members of the city of God we are called to be channels of that divine love and grace, extending the streams of blessing to families, communities and beyond. By sharing God’s life‑giving presence we bring glory to Him and help build up His kingdom.

Overall, this verse reminds us that abundant blessings and joy flow from dwelling in God’s presence. It invites us to seek His refreshing guidance, to share His grace generously, and to rejoice in the continual flow of His mercy.
