Psalms 46:8

Listen to this article

“Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth.”

Context:Psalms 46 is a psalm attributed to the sons of Korah, and it focuses on God’s protection and deliverance for His people in times of trouble. The psalm celebrates God’s power and sovereignty, emphasizing His presence as a refuge and strength in times of distress.

Invitation to Observe God’s Works:The verse begins with an invitation: “Come, behold the works of the LORD.” This call to witness God’s works prompts us to reflect on His mighty deeds throughout history. It encourages us to pay attention to God’s actions and discern His hand at work.

Desolations in the Earth:The second part of the verse says, “what desolations he hath made in the earth.” This phrase may seem puzzling at first because it refers to God’s acts of bringing desolation or destruction upon the earth. However, it’s important to consider the broader message of the psalm.

God’s Sovereign Power:The verse highlights God’s sovereign power and authority over all things, including His ability to bring about desolations or destruction when necessary. It acknowledges that God’s acts of judgment and intervention can result in upheaval and devastation on earth. This recognition emphasises God’s role as the supreme ruler and reminds us of His ultimate control over the affairs of humanity.

  • By contemplating God’s works, including the desolations He has made in the earth, we are invited to reflect on His power, justice, and righteousness. This verse prompts us to consider the consequences of our actions and the importance of aligning our lives with God’s will.

Additionally, the verse encourages us to place our trust in God as our refuge and strength. It reminds us that even in times of upheaval or destruction, God remains present and offers solace and protection to His people.

Overall, Psalms 46:8 serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty and His role as both a just judge and a compassionate protector. It prompts us to seek a deeper understanding of His works and to find comfort and security in His presence.
