Psalms 49:12

Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.

Psalms 49:12 (KJV)

Psalm 49 is a wisdom psalm from the sons of Korah. It teaches about the temporary nature of wealth and the danger of trusting in it for security. The surrounding verses show that both the wise and the foolish die and leave their riches behind. Even the honoured cannot escape death, for their graves become their eternal homes.

The word “man” here is “Adam” in Hebrew. Some Jewish interpreters see a link to the first man, Adam, who was created in honour but did not remain in that state. The verse says that even a person who is honoured or wealthy cannot stay alive forever. Death comes to everyone, no matter how high their position.

The comparison to beasts that perish is strong. Animals die and their bodies return to the earth. Humans, apart from God, face the same end. Honour and wealth cannot stop death or give lasting life. The Hebrew word for “honour” can also mean “pomp” or “wealth,” reinforcing the idea of impermanence.

Psalm 49:20 repeats the same idea and adds that a man in honour who lacks understanding is like the beasts. This shows that the problem is not honour itself, but a lack of wisdom. Without understanding, people live as if this life is all there is. The psalm’s overall message is that wealth cannot redeem a person or grant immortality; only God can redeem.

This verse warns against pride and self-reliance. It is foolish to build life on things that do not last. Instead, believers are called to humility and dependence on God, who alone can redeem and give eternal life. Consider what you are trusting for security. Earthly achievements and possessions will pass away. True hope is found in God, who offers what wealth cannot buy: a life that endures beyond the grave.

Take time to examine your heart. Do you rely on status, wealth, or your own efforts? These cannot save you. Only God can. Let this verse lead you to humble trust in Him, who alone gives lasting life.
