Psalms 50:19

Posted on 18 May at 15:16

“Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.”

Certainly! Let’s do a Bible study on Psalm 50:19 in the King James Version:

Psalm 50:19 (KJV) says:

This verse is part of a larger psalm written by Asaph, one of the chief musicians appointed by David. The psalm begins with a call to gather before God, as He speaks out of Zion, which symbolizes His dwelling place among His people (Psalm 50:1-2).

In verse 19, God is addressing a specific group of people who are engaging in sinful behaviour. The verse describes their actions, specifically focusing on their speech. They use their mouths for evil, speaking words that are harmful, deceptive, or malicious. Their tongues are described as “framing deceit,” suggesting that they are deliberately constructing lies and falsehoods.

This verse highlights the issue of hypocrisy and insincere worship. The psalm as a whole emphasises the importance of true devotion and worship that comes from the heart rather than mere external rituals and sacrifices. God desires sincere worship and obedience from His people.

By highlighting the misuse of speech in this verse, God reveals His concern for integrity and truthfulness in human interactions. It reminds us that our words have power and consequences. Throughout the Bible, there are numerous teachings on the importance of guarding our tongues and speaking words of truth, encouragement, and edification.

Psalm 50:19 serves as a warning to those who engage in deceitful speech. It reminds us that God is aware of our actions, including our words, and will hold us accountable for them. It encourages us to examine our own hearts and actions, ensuring that our speech reflects godly character and aligns with His truth.
