Psalms 53:4

Listen to this article

“Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread: they have not called upon God.”

This verse is part of Psalm 53, which is attributed to King David. It is a psalm that highlights the folly and wickedness of those who reject God and live in sin. Let’s break down this verse and explore its meaning.

“Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge?”: This question reflects David’s astonishment and lament over the lack of understanding or wisdom among those who engage in wickedness. It suggests that those who persist in sinful behaviour may lack spiritual insight and fail to grasp the consequences of their actions. David acknowledges the need for knowledge and wisdom to discern what is right and to follow God’s ways.

“Who eat up my people as they eat bread”: This vivid imagery portrays the actions of the wicked. They metaphorically “eat up” God’s people, meaning they oppress, harm, and exploit them without remorse. The phrase emphasises the ease and casualness with which they carry out their wicked deeds, just as they would consume a meal.

“They have not called upon God.”: This phrase indicates the disregard or indifference of the wicked toward God. They have not sought His guidance, mercy, or forgiveness. Instead, they rely on their own devices and engage in sinful behaviour without considering the consequences. It highlights their separation from the righteous path and their rejection of the one true God.
