Listen to this article

“There were they in great fear, where no fear was: for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee: thou hast put them to shame, because God hath despised them.”

Psalm 53:5 (KJV) says: “There were they in great fear, where no fear was: for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee: thou hast put them to shame, because God hath despised them.”

Context: Psalm 53 is attributed to David and is a lamentation concerning the fool who denies the existence of God. It highlights the consequences of unbelief and wickedness. Verse 5 occurs towards the end of the psalm and describes the fate of those who oppose God’s people.

Great fear where no fear was: This phrase refers to the state of the wicked, who are gripped by fear even in situations where there is no apparent reason for it. Despite their unbelief, the wicked are haunted by a sense of dread because they are opposed to God’s ways and stand in defiance of Him. Their fear is a consequence of their rebellion against God and the knowledge of His judgment.

God scattering the bones of the encampment: In biblical imagery, scattering bones is a symbol of destruction and defeat. God, as the righteous judge, intervenes on behalf of His people and disperses the strength and unity of those who encamp against them. This signifies the victory of God’s people over their enemies and the defeat of those who oppose God’s purposes.

Putting them to shame: The psalmist declares that God has caused shame to come upon the enemies of His people. Their plans and schemes are thwarted, and they are left humiliated. God’s intervention brings about a reversal of fortune, where those who oppose Him and His people are humbled and brought low.

God’s disdain for the wicked: The verse concludes by stating that God despises those who encamp against His people. Their wickedness and rebellion against Him are met with God’s righteous judgment and rejection. This highlights the seriousness of opposing God and the consequences that follow.

Overall, Psalm 53:5 emphasizes the contrast between the fear and defeat of the wicked and the protection and vindication of God’s people. It serves as a reminder that God is the ultimate judge who opposes those who rebel against Him and defends those who trust in Him. The verse portrays the consequences of unbelief and the ultimate triumph of God’s righteousness over wickedness.
