Destroy, O Lord, and diuide their tongues: for I haue seene violence and strife in the citie. Psalms 55:9 (KJV)

Destroy, O Lord,

and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city. Psalms 55:9 (KJV)

Context: To understand this verse, it is helpful to consider the broader setting of Psalm 55. David composed this psalm in a period of rebellion and turmoil in Israel, expressing his distress and anguish over betrayal by a close friend, possibly Ahithophel or Absalom. He pours out his heart to God, seeking help and deliverance amid the chaos.

Crying out to God for justice:

In verse 9 David implores the Lord to intervene, asking that God destroy the plans of those who have acted violently and caused strife in the city. He petitions that God divide their tongues, a phrase that may signify confusion and discord among his enemies.

Recognizing the presence of violence and strife:

David openly acknowledges the existence of violence and strife within the city. This acknowledgment reveals his deep concern for the welfare of his people and the stability of the kingdom, as well as his longing for justice and peace to be restored.

Seeking divine intervention:

By crying out, David places his trust in God as the ultimate source of deliverance and resolution. The verse demonstrates David’s reliance on God’s sovereignty and His ability to bring about justice, showing confidence that the Lord can address the injustice and turmoil he witnesses.

Application for believers:

Although the psalm reflects David’s specific situation, its themes resonate with believers today. We too may experience injustice, betrayal, and turmoil. Like David, we can bring our cries before God, trusting that He is attentive to our prayers and has the power to bring about justice and resolution.

Trusting in God’s timing:

After expressing anguish and seeking divine help, David goes on to affirm his confidence in God’s faithfulness and salvation throughout the remainder of Psalm 55. This encourages believers to trust in God’s timing and wisdom, even when faced with difficult circumstances, knowing that He will act according to His perfect plan.
