Psalms 60:9

“Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?”

Historical Context:Psalm 60 is attributed to King David and is classified as a lament. It was likely written during a time of conflict and distress in Israel’s history. Some scholars believe that it was written after David’s failed attempt to conquer the city of Edom, a neighbouring kingdom.

Seeking God’s Guidance:In verse 9, David expresses his longing for guidance and assistance from God. He asks two rhetorical questions: “Who will bring me into the strong city? Who will lead me into Edom?” These questions reflect his desire for divine intervention and help in achieving victory over his enemies.

The Strong City and Edom:The strong city mentioned in the verse refers to a fortified city, symbolising the stronghold of David’s enemies. Edom, on the other hand, represents the region or kingdom that David sought to conquer. Edom was known for its strong fortresses and opposition to Israel throughout its history.

Trusting in God’s Power:David’s questions in this verse imply his acknowledgment of his own limitations and dependence on God. He recognises that victory cannot be achieved by his own strength or military might alone. Instead, he looks to God for guidance, deliverance, and victory over his enemies.

God’s Faithfulness:It is important to note that although David expressed his longing for victory and guidance in this psalm, the ultimate fulfilment of God’s promise and deliverance may not be immediate. In the subsequent verses of Psalm 60, David acknowledges that victory ultimately comes from God and that He will accomplish His purposes in due time. Similarly, in our own lives, we must trust in God’s faithfulness and timing. Even when we face setbacks or seemingly unanswered prayers, we can rely on God’s promises and know that He is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).
