He onely is my rocke and my saluation: he is my defence, I shall not be greatly moued. Psalms 62:2 (KJV)

He only

is my rock and my salvation;

he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved. Psalms 62:2 (KJV)

The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic and lyrical expressions of worship, prayers, and reflections on various aspects of life and faith. It was traditionally attributed to King David, who composed many of the psalms. Psalm 62 is categorised as a psalm of trust, where the psalmist expresses unwavering confidence in God amidst challenges and opposition.

The psalmist declares, “He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.” In this verse the psalmist proclaims that God alone is their rock and salvation. The metaphor of God as a rock signifies stability, strength, and immovability. By acknowledging God as their rock, the psalmist emphasizes reliance on God as the firm foundation and source of security. The psalmist also recognises that God is their salvation, their deliverer from troubles. The statement “He is my defence” conveys that God is the refuge, shield, and protector. In times of trouble or when faced with adversaries, the psalmist finds solace in knowing that God is their defender. The declaration “I shall not be greatly moved” expresses confidence that they will not be greatly shaken or disturbed.

Application: Psalms 62:2 encourages believers to place their trust in God alone. By recognising God as our rock, salvation, and defence, we can find stability, deliverance, and protection in Him. It calls us to rely on God’s strength rather than our own and to seek Him as our source of security. This verse reminds us that no matter what challenges or opposition we encounter, our faith in God can anchor us and give us the assurance that we will not be greatly moved.

Thus Psalm 62:2 is a powerful declaration of trust in God. It invites us to place our complete reliance on Him, acknowledging Him as our rock, salvation, defence, and source of stability. By doing so, we can find strength, security, and confidence in our walk of faith.
