The first chapter of the Gospel of Mark in the King James Version (KJV) introduces the ministry of Jesus Christ. It begins with the fulfillment of prophecy as John the Baptist appears in the wilderness, preparing the way for the coming Messiah. John baptizes people, including Jesus, who is then anointed by the Holy Spirit and receives the divine affirmation of being God’s beloved Son.
Following his baptism, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where he faces temptation by Satan for forty days. Overcoming these trials, Jesus emerges and begins his public ministry, proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God. He calls upon people to repent and believe in the gospel, inviting them to turn away from sin and embrace God’s salvation.
Jesus then calls his first disciples—Simon, Andrew, James, and John—by the Sea of Galilee. They immediately leave their fishing nets behind and follow him. Jesus teaches in the synagogue and astonishes the people with his authority. He casts out an unclean spirit from a possessed man, further demonstrating his power over evil.
Word spreads quickly about Jesus’ remarkable deeds, and people from all around come to him seeking healing and deliverance. He heals Simon’s mother-in-law and many others afflicted with various diseases and illnesses. In the early morning hours, Jesus retreats to a solitary place to pray.
As the chapter concludes, Jesus declares his purpose to preach in other cities and continues to heal and exorcise demons throughout Galilee, gaining popularity and acclaim.
