Mark 1:38

And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth.

Context

Mark 1:38 comes right after a busy day of ministry in Capernaum, where Jesus taught with authority, cast out demons, and healed the sick, including Simon’s mother-in-law (Mark 1:21-34). The disciples found Him praying in a solitary place and told Him, “Every man seeketh for thee” (Mark 1:37). Instead of returning to the crowds, Jesus redirected them toward the wider mission: “Let us go into the next towns.” The Greek word rendered “towns” (kōmopoleis) describes places between villages and cities, sometimes called “village cities.” Jesus’ response shows that His ministry was never meant to be limited to one location or one group of people.

Meaning

Jesus’ words, “for therefore came I forth,” reveal His clear sense of purpose. He came into the world to preach the good news of the kingdom of God and to bring salvation to all people. His mission extended beyond Capernaum, beyond the crowds who were looking for Him, and even beyond the miracles He had performed. The parallel account in Luke 4:43 uses similar language: “I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.” That word “must” points to the divine necessity behind His preaching mission. Jesus was not drifting from place to place; He was fulfilling the purpose for which the Father sent Him.

Biblical connections

Mark 1:39 immediately shows Jesus carrying out this purpose: “And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils.” His words in verse 38 were not just a plan; they became action. The verse also connects to the broader Gospel theme that the good news is meant to be shared broadly, not hoarded in one place. Jesus’ example teaches that success in one area should not distract from the larger mission.

Application

Mark 1:38 challenges believers to share the Gospel with intentionality and urgency. Just as Jesus stepped out of a place of popularity to reach other towns, we are called to step out of our comfort zones and take the message of salvation to different people and places. The verse encourages us to remain focused on our mission, not allowing success, opposition, or the demands of the crowd to deter us. We can ask ourselves: Are we willing to leave what is comfortable to proclaim the good news where it has not yet been heard?

Reflection

Jesus’ perseverance in His mission is a model for us. He did not let the excitement of one place distract Him from His ultimate purpose. As we face challenges in our own lives, we can draw strength from His example. He remained focused on preaching the kingdom of God, and He calls us to share that same message with the same determination.
