Mark 1:40

Listen to this article

“And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.”

Context:Mark 1:40 is part of the first chapter of the Gospel of Mark, which introduces the ministry of Jesus Christ. In the preceding verses, Jesus had been healing various individuals, casting out unclean spirits, and preaching in Galilee.

The Leper’s Approach:In this verse, a leper approaches Jesus. Leprosy was a contagious and disfiguring skin disease that carried social and religious stigma. The leper’s act of approaching Jesus, despite societal barriers, demonstrates great faith and humility.

Beseeching and Kneeling:The leper beseeches Jesus, which means he earnestly implores or begs Him. By kneeling down, the leper shows reverence and acknowledges Jesus’ authority and power.

Faith in Jesus’ Ability:The leper expresses his belief in Jesus’ ability to heal by saying, “If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.” He recognizes that Jesus has the power to heal him if it aligns with Jesus’ will. The leper’s statement demonstrates both humility and confidence in Jesus’ authority and ability.

Understanding the Healing:By approaching Jesus and acknowledging His power, the leper seeks not only physical healing but also cleansing from his condition. Leprosy was considered unclean according to Jewish law (Leviticus 13-14), and being cleansed would allow the leper to rejoin society and participate in religious activities.
