Mark 1:2

Listen to this article

“As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.”

Context:Before diving into the specific verse, it’s important to understand the context. The Gospel of Mark is the second book in the New Testament and focuses on the ministry of Jesus Christ. Mark begins by introducing John the Baptist as the messenger who prepares the way for Jesus.

Old Testament Prophecy:Mark quotes from the Old Testament to establish the fulfilment of prophecy. He refers to two passages: Malachi 3:1 and Isaiah 40:3. In Malachi 3:1, God says, “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me.” And in Isaiah 40:3, it says, “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”

The Messenger:The verse in Mark identifies John the Baptist as the messenger prophesied in the Old Testament. John’s role was to prepare the way for the coming of the Lord, Jesus Christ. He did this through his preaching, calling people to repentance, and baptizing them as a symbol of their repentance.

Preparing the Way:John the Baptist’s mission was to prepare people’s hearts and minds for the arrival of Jesus. He called them to turn away from their sins and to prepare themselves for the coming of the Messiah. John’s message emphasized repentance and the need for a change of heart and a turning toward God.

  • The Fulfillment of Prophecy:Mark’s use of Old Testament prophecy emphasizes the fulfilment of God’s promises. It shows that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah foretold by the prophets. This verse highlights the continuity between the Old Testament and the New Testament, demonstrating that Jesus is the fulfilment of God’s plan of redemption.
