He ruleth by his power for euer, his eyes behold the nations: let not the rebellious exalt themselues. Selah. Psalms 66:7 (KJV)

Psalm 66:7 (KJV) declares, “He ruleth by his power forever; his eyes behold the nations: let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah.” This verse sits within a psalm of thanksgiving that celebrates God’s mighty acts of deliverance. The surrounding psalm praises God for past victories and invites the community to join in worship, setting the stage for a profound declaration of divine sovereignty.

God’s Rule and Power

The opening clause affirms that God “rules by His power forever.” This language underscores an eternal, unchanging authority that surpasses any human or earthly power. Believers are reminded that God’s reign is not limited by time or circumstance; He remains the supreme ruler over all creation. This assurance steadies the faithful, offering comfort that the One who governs the universe is steadfast and omnipotent.

God’s Omniscience

The phrase “His eyes behold the nations” highlights God’s all‑seeing nature. Scripture teaches that nothing escapes His sight—every nation, every heart, and every action are known to Him. This comprehensive awareness assures us that God is intimately involved in the affairs of humanity, observing both the triumphs and the trials of peoples across the earth.

Warning to the Rebellious

The concluding admonition, “let not the rebellious exalt themselves,” serves as a sober reminder that prideful opposition to God’s authority is futile. It calls for humility, urging those who might be tempted to elevate themselves against divine rule to recognize the futility of such rebellion. The warning points to the ultimate downfall that follows self‑exaltation in defiance of the Almighty.

Selah

The term “Selah,” placed at the end, invites a pause for reflection. Though its exact musical meaning is uncertain, it functions as a moment to let the profound truths of God’s power, knowledge, and the call to humility resonate within the worshiper’s heart.

In sum, Psalm 66:7 encapsulates the core biblical themes of God’s eternal sovereignty, His all‑seeing presence, and the imperative for humility before Him. Meditating on these truths strengthens faith and aligns the believer’s life with the reverent awe that the psalmist expresses.
