He turned the sea into dry land: they went through the flood on foote, there did we reioyce in him. Psalms 66:6 (KJV)

Psalm 66 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving to God for His mighty works and deliverance. Verse 6 specifically recounts the historic crossing of the Red Sea during the Exodus, a defining moment for Israel.

Historical Context: In Exodus 14 the Israelites were trapped between the pursuing Egyptian army and the Red Sea. Fearful and seemingly hopeless, they witnessed God instruct Moses to stretch out his hand over the waters. The sea was divided, allowing the people to walk on dry ground while the returning waters drowned the Egyptian forces.

Symbolic Significance: This miraculous passage stands as a powerful symbol of God’s deliverance and salvation. It shows His ability to intervene in impossible situations and rescue His people, giving the psalmist a solid reason for rejoicing and praising God.

Spiritual Application: Beyond its historical importance, Psalm 66:6 teaches believers that God is a deliverer who can make a way where there seems to be none. The passage encourages trust in Him even amid overwhelming obstacles. Just as the Israelites went through the sea on foot, we can walk through life’s trials with confidence, knowing that God is with us and will provide a way forward.

Gratitude and Worship: The psalmist’s response to this deliverance is one of joyous gratitude. The entire psalm stresses the need to offer praise and thanksgiving for God’s mighty acts, urging us to remember and celebrate how He has worked in our lives, both individually and corporately, and to express that gratitude through worship and adoration.

In summary, Psalm 66:6 reflects on the crossing of the Red Sea, a pivotal event that proclaims God’s power, deliverance, and faithfulness. It calls us to trust in God’s ability to make a way where there seems to be none and to respond with heartfelt praise and thanksgiving for His mighty works.
