Psalms 66:11

“Thou broughtest us into the net; thou laidst affliction upon our loins.”

Psalm 66 is a hymn of praise and thanksgiving, celebrating God’s mighty acts and deliverance. In verse 11, the psalmist acknowledges a period of difficulty and affliction, recognising that God allowed them to be caught in a metaphorical net and burdened with affliction.

This verse conveys a sense of surrender and acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty even in times of hardship. It is a reminder that God, in His wisdom and providence, may allow His people to experience trials and afflictions for various reasons.

Let’s explore a few key points that can be derived from this verse:

The recognition of God’s role in adversity:The psalmist acknowledges that it is God who brings them into the net and lays affliction upon their loins. This statement emphasises the belief that God is ultimately in control of all circumstances, including both times of prosperity and times of difficulty.

The acknowledgment of human vulnerability:By describing the affliction being laid upon their loins, the psalmist acknowledges the weight and burden of suffering. It highlights the human experience of vulnerability and the need for God’s intervention and deliverance.

The implication of divine purpose in affliction:While the psalmist recognises God’s role in their affliction, they do not question or doubt God’s goodness. The verse doesn’t delve into the reason behind the affliction, but it implies that there might be a divine purpose or lesson to be learned through the challenging experience.

It’s important to remember that this verse is part of a larger psalm of praise and thanksgiving. The subsequent verses (Psalm 66:12-20) express the psalmist’s gratitude for God’s deliverance and describe the various ways in which God has shown His faithfulness throughout history.

Overall, Psalm 66:11 reminds believers to trust in God’s sovereignty, even during times of affliction. It encourages them to turn to God in prayer, seeking His guidance and deliverance, while also acknowledging that trials and challenges are part of the human experience.
