Psalms 67:1

Listen to this article

“God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us; Selah.”

This verse is the opening verse of Psalm 67, which is a beautiful psalm of praise and petition to God. Let’s break down this verse and explore its meaning and significance.

“God be merciful unto us”: The psalmist begins with a plea for God’s mercy. This acknowledges our need for God’s forgiveness, compassion, and grace. It humbly recognizes that we are dependent on God’s mercy for our well-being and salvation.

“and bless us”: The psalmist then asks for God’s blessings. This request goes beyond material blessings and encompasses all aspects of life-physical, emotional, and spiritual. It expresses the desire for God’s favour, abundance, and provision.

“and cause his face to shine upon us”: Here, the psalmist prays for the radiance of God’s presence and favour to be upon them. It implies a longing for a deep, intimate relationship with God. The shining face of God symbolises His delight, pleasure, and approval. It is an invitation for God to reveal Himself and His glory to His people.

“Selah”: The word “Selah” appears frequently in the Psalms and is believed to be a musical or liturgical term. Its exact meaning is uncertain, but it is thought to indicate a pause or reflection-a moment to ponder and absorb the message of the preceding verses.

This verse highlights the psalmist’s recognition of God’s mercy, their desire for God’s blessings, and their longing for a close relationship with Him. It sets the tone for the rest of the psalm, which goes on to declare God’s sovereignty, praise His righteous judgments, and anticipate the universal worship of God among the nations.

As we reflect on this verse, we can also make it personal and offer our own prayers for God’s mercy, blessings, and the radiance of His presence in our lives. We can seek His forgiveness, His favour, and a deeper connection with Him. It reminds us of our dependence on God and His abundant goodness.

Remember that while this study provides a deeper understanding of Psalm 67:1, it is also beneficial to read the entire psalm and explore the surrounding verses to grasp the full context and meaning of the passage.
