Psalms 76:9

Listen to this article

“When God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. Selah.”

This verse is part of Psalm 76, which is attributed to Asaph, one of the Levites appointed by David to lead worship in the tabernacle. The psalm is a song of praise and thanksgiving, focusing on God’s deliverance and victory over his enemies.

Psalm 76:9 highlights a specific moment when God arose to execute judgment and save the meek or humble ones of the earth. Let’s break it down further:

“When God arose to judgment”: This phrase signifies a decisive action by God. It speaks of a moment when God, in his sovereignty, arises or stands up to bring forth judgment. It implies that God is actively involved in the affairs of humanity and will ensure justice.

“To save all the meek of the earth”: The purpose of God’s judgment is not merely to condemn but also to save. Here, the focus is on the meek or humble individuals of the earth. The meek are those who recognise their need for God, who humbly submit to His will, and who trust in His deliverance. God’s desire is to bring salvation to those who humble themselves before Him.

“Selah”: The term “Selah” is used throughout the Psalms and is believed to be a musical notation. Its precise meaning is uncertain, but it is often interpreted as a pause or a moment for reflection. In this verse, it provides an opportunity for the listener or reader to meditate on the profound truth expressed.

Overall, Psalm 76:9 reminds us that God is a righteous judge who actively intervenes in the world to bring about justice and salvation. It encourages us to trust in God’s sovereignty and to find comfort in the fact that He will ultimately save the humble and meek. This verse also highlights the importance of humility and submission before God, recognising our need for His intervention and deliverance.

By studying this verse, we can be reminded of God’s active involvement in the world, His desire for justice, and His redemptive work on behalf of the humble. It encourages us to place our trust in Him and seek His guidance in all areas of our lives.
