Psalms 78:60
“So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men.”
Context:Psalm 78 is a historical psalm that recounts the faithfulness of God throughout Israel’s history and the unfaithfulness of the Israelites. It serves as a reminder of God’s mighty works and the consequences of disobedience.
Shiloh was a significant location in the history of Israel. After the Israelites entered the Promised Land, the tabernacle, which housed the Ark of the Covenant, was established in Shiloh (Joshua 18:1). Shiloh served as the central place of worship for the Israelites during the time of the judges.
In Psalm 78:60, the psalmist recounts a significant event in Israel’s history when God forsook or abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh. This refers to the time when the Philistines captured the Ark of the Covenant during the days of the high priest Eli (1 Samuel 4:10-11). This event marked a low point in Israel’s spiritual and national life.
The abandonment of the tabernacle at Shiloh was a severe consequence of Israel’s disobedience and unfaithfulness to God. Their sin and idolatry led to God withdrawing His presence and allowing the enemies to overtake them. This event was a clear reminder of the importance of obedience and the consequences of forsaking God.
Psalm 78:60 serves as a reminder to us of the importance of remaining faithful to God and not forsaking His presence. It warns us about the consequences of disobedience and idolatry. Just as God withdrew His presence from the tabernacle of Shiloh, we risk losing the blessing of God and His guidance if we turn away from Him and pursue our own desires.
This verse encourages us to cultivate a steadfast commitment to God, seeking His presence, and remaining faithful to His commands. It also reminds us that God’s presence is not to be taken lightly, and we should guard against anything that may lead us away from Him.
