Listen to this article

“So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name.”

This verse is part of Psalm 80, which is attributed to Asaph, one of the chief musicians during the time of David and Solomon. Psalm 80 is a prayer for the restoration of Israel, emphasizing the need for God’s intervention and the people’s commitment to Him.

In verse 18, the psalmist expresses a determination to remain faithful to God and not turn away from Him. Let’s break down the verse to gain a deeper understanding:

"So will not we go back from thee":The psalmist begins by making a declaration of commitment to God. They express their determination to stay faithful and not turn away from Him. This statement acknowledges the tendency of people to stray from God and affirms the psalmist’s desire to remain steadfast.

"Quicken us":The word "quicken" means to revive or restore. Here, the psalmist is asking God to revive them, to bring life and vitality back into their spiritual journey. It is a plea for divine intervention, recognizing their need for God’s presence and power in their lives.

"And we will call upon thy name":The psalmist promises that if God revives them, they will call upon His name. This statement reveals the psalmist’s desire for a renewed relationship with God. Calling upon God’s name signifies prayer, worship, and seeking His guidance and help.

In summary, Psalm 80:18 is a plea for divine intervention and a commitment to remain faithful to God. The psalmist acknowledges the tendency to wander away from God and asks Him to revive their spiritual life. They also express their intention to call upon God’s name and seek Him in prayer. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of staying close to God, relying on His strength, and seeking Him with a sincere heart.
