Psalms 80:16

Posted on 18 May at 15:15

“It is burned with fire, it is cut down: they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.”

Context:Psalm 80 is attributed to Asaph and is a prayer for the restoration of Israel. It begins with a plea for God to listen and restore His people. In verse 16, the psalmist describes the condition of the vineyard, which symbolises the nation of Israel. The vineyard is depicted as burned, cut down, and perishing due to the rebuke of God’s countenance.

Symbolism of the Vineyard:In the Old Testament, Israel is often referred to as a vineyard (e.g., Isaiah 5:1-7, Jeremiah 2:21). The vineyard represents God’s chosen people, and the psalmist is using this imagery to illustrate the state of Israel at that time. The vineyard has been ravaged, and the people are in distress.

Judgment and Discipline:The phrase "burned with fire" suggests destruction and judgment. The vineyard being "cut down" implies that it has been laid waste and is no longer productive. These images reflect the consequences of the people’s disobedience and turning away from God. The "rebuke of thy countenance" signifies God’s disapproval and discipline in response to their rebellion.

God’s Sovereignty:Despite the dire circumstances depicted in the verse, it is crucial to recognise that the psalmist acknowledges God’s power and control over the situation. The destruction and perishing occur because of the rebuke of God’s countenance. This shows that even in times of discipline and judgment, God remains sovereign and has the ability to restore and renew.

Application:As believers today, we can learn several lessons from this verse. Firstly, it reminds us of the consequences of turning away from God and the importance of repentance. Secondly, it emphasises the need for seeking God’s restoration and intervention when we face difficult circumstances or when we realise our spiritual decline. Lastly, it encourages us to trust in God’s sovereignty, even in the midst of trials and discipline, knowing that He can bring about restoration and renewal in our lives.

  • In conclusion:Psalm 80:16 (KJV) serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience and the need for repentance. It highlights God’s sovereignty in judgment and restoration, urging us to trust in Him and seek His intervention in our lives.
