Psalms 80:17
Let thy hand be vpon the man of thy right hand: vpon the sonne of man, whom thou madest strong for thy selfe. Psalms 80:17 (KJV)
Historical Context: Psalm 80 is attributed to Asaph, one of the chief musicians during the reign of King David and his successors. It is a communal lament expressing the sorrow and plea of Israel during a time of distress, possibly national calamity or captivity.
In verse 17 the psalmist calls upon God to place His hand upon “the man of thy right hand,” also described as “the son of man whom thou madest strong for thyself.” Key points to consider:
- God’s Hand – The reference to God’s hand represents His power, authority, and intervention in human affairs. It symbolizes His ability to bring about deliverance, protection, and blessing.
- The Man of Thy Right Hand – This phrase refers to a human figure appointed by God to a position of honor or leadership, such as a divinely appointed king or the Messiah. Psalm 110:1 clarifies the distinction, stating, “The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand,” indicating a distinct human recipient of divine authority.
- The Son of Man – In biblical language the term “son of man” often denotes humanity in general, but it can also serve as a messianic title, as seen in the teachings of Jesus. Here it may point to a future Messiah, a chosen one anointed by God to fulfil His purposes and bring salvation.
- Whom Thou Madest Strong for Thyself – This phrase emphasizes that the person on whom God’s hand rests is made strong by God for a specific purpose, signifying divine enablement and empowerment for the task at hand.
Application:
Trust in God’s Intervention – Just as the psalmist implores God to extend His hand, believers are encouraged to place their trust in God’s intervention and deliverance in times of trouble, expecting restoration, healing, and salvation.
Seek God’s Anointed One – The reference to the “son of man” invites reflection on Jesus Christ as the ultimate fulfillment of this title, whose guidance, strength, and salvation are offered to all who believe.
Recognize God’s Empowerment – The phrase reminds us that any strength or ability we possess ultimately comes from God. We should acknowledge His enablement and use our gifts, talents, and abilities for His purposes and glory.
Pray for God’s Hand upon Us – We can pray that God’s hand would rest upon us, seeking His guidance, protection, and empowerment. Trust that He will equip us for the tasks He has called us to and lead us on the right path.
Encouragement to Study – Studying Scripture involves exploring various interpretations and seeking personal revelation from God. Consulting commentaries, study resources, and knowledgeable individuals can deepen our understanding of the passage.
