Psalms 81:12

So I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lust: and they walked in their own counsels.

Psalms 81:12 (KJV)

Psalm 81 comes from Asaph, one of David’s chief musicians and a seer. The psalm recalls God’s faithful care for Israel, especially His deliverance from Egypt and the covenant He made with them. Yet Israel often refused to listen. Verse 12 records God’s response to their stubborn disobedience.

When God says, “So I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lust,” He is not acting carelessly. This is a righteous judgment. Because the people would not obey Him, He withdrew His restraining grace and allowed them to follow their own stubborn desires. The phrase “hearts’ lust” means a willful, persistent rebellion, not a moment of weakness. This is not passive abandonment but a deliberate act of judgment.

The second part, “they walked in their own counsels,” shows the result. The people chose their own wisdom and plans instead of God’s commands. They lived by their own advice, both in worship and in daily life. This path led them away from Him and into harm. Their rebellion was not accidental; it was a settled choice.

This divine “giving over” is a severe form of judgment. It is worse than punishment by enemies because it leads to spiritual ruin. Since they would not have God, He let them have their own way. The next verse, Psalm 81:13, shows God’s longing for His people to listen and walk in His ways. His judgment is not cruel; it is the natural result of their own choices. Persistent rejection of God’s voice can bring a point where He confirms the sinner in their chosen path.

This verse warns us today. When we reject God’s counsel and follow our own understanding, we can drift from His plan. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not to lean on our own understanding. We must examine our hearts and ask whether we are truly listening to God or simply following our own desires. The warning is sobering, but it also calls us to respond while there is still time.

God is faithful even when we stray. He is always ready to receive us back when we repent. But we must not harden our hearts. Let us heed His voice while there is still time, choosing His ways over our own counsels.
