Psalms 87:1

Posted on 18 May at 15:15
Listen to this article

“His foundation is in the holy mountains.”

Historical Context:Psalms 87 is attributed to the Sons of Korah, who were Levites responsible for temple worship. This psalm is often considered a song of Zion, celebrating the glory and significance of Jerusalem, the city of God.

  • The Foundation:

The verse begins with the statement, “His foundation.” Here, “His” refers to God, who is the foundation of all things. The foundation of God is a spiritual reality, representing His unchanging and eternal nature. It implies that everything that exists, including Jerusalem, finds its ultimate purpose and meaning in God.

Holy Mountains:The verse mentions “holy mountains,” which is often understood as a reference to Mount Zion. In the Old Testament, Mount Zion was the hill within Jerusalem where the Temple was built, symbolizing God’s presence among His people. It was considered holy because of God’s dwelling there.

Symbolic Meaning:The mention of the foundation being in the holy mountains carries symbolic significance. Mountains are often associated with stability, strength, and grandeur. In this context, it suggests that God’s foundation, His firm and unshakeable support, is established on the holy mountain of Zion. It emphasizes the divine origin and authority of Jerusalem as the center of God’s redemptive work.

Spiritual Application:

  • Expanding the Concept:

While the immediate context of this verse relates to Jerusalem, we can expand the concept to apply to our lives today. We can see the foundation of God as representative of His character, His promises, and His Word. By aligning our lives with His truth and relying on His strength, we can find stability and purpose.
