Psalms 88:2

Listen to this article

“Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry”

Context of the Psalm:Psalm 88 is a psalm of lament attributed to Heman the Ezrahite. It is a deeply sorrowful and desperate prayer expressing the psalmist’s anguish, distress, and feeling of abandonment. The psalmist is overwhelmed with suffering, feels near death, and perceives God as distant and unresponsive.

The plea for prayer:The verse begins with a plea for the psalmist’s prayer to come before God. It reflects the psalmist’s desire for God to acknowledge and accept their prayer. This plea reveals the psalmist’s confidence in God’s willingness to listen to the cries of His people. It acknowledges the importance of prayer as a means of communication between the psalmist and God.

Incline thine ear:The psalmist implores God to incline His ear to their cry. This phrase indicates the psalmist’s earnest longing for God’s attention and intervention. It demonstrates a deep sense of dependence on God’s active involvement in their situation. By asking God to incline His ear, the psalmist is expressing a desire for God to listen attentively and with compassion.

The significance of prayer:Throughout the Bible, prayer is depicted as a vital aspect of the relationship between humans and God. It is a means by which individuals can communicate their needs, concerns, and desires to God. Prayer is an avenue for seeking God’s guidance, expressing gratitude, confessing sins, and finding comfort and strength in times of distress.

Application for believers:Psalm 88:2 reminds believers of the importance of maintaining an active prayer life. It encourages believers to approach God with their needs, concerns, and emotions, just as the psalmist did. It assures believers that God hears their prayers and is attentive to their cries. Even in times of difficulty, when it may seem as if God is distant, believers can find solace in knowing that God is listening and responding according to His perfect will.

Understanding God’s response:Although Psalm 88 predominantly expresses despair, it is essential to remember that the psalmist’s perspective does not encompass the fullness of God’s character or His ultimate plan. As believers, we must interpret this psalm in light of the broader biblical context and the promises of God. While the psalmist feels abandoned and unheard, we have the assurance that God is near to the brokenhearted and responds to the cries of His people (Psalm 34:18).

Psalm 88:2 conveys the psalmist’s desperate plea for God’s attention and intervention. It reminds us of the significance of prayer and the assurance that God hears and responds to the cries of His people. Despite moments of despair, believers can trust in God’s faithfulness and find solace in His presence.
