Psalms 90:11

Posted on 18 May at 15:14

“Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.”

Context:This verse is part of a prayerful psalm attributed to Moses, the great leader of Israel, who penned this psalm. It reflects on the eternal nature of God and the frailty of human life. Let’s examine the verse in its broader context within Psalm 90 to gain a deeper understanding.

Psalm 90 is a unique psalm that contrasts the everlasting nature of God with the transient nature of humanity. It begins by acknowledging God as the dwelling place of His people in all generations (verse 1). It acknowledges His eternal existence before the creation of the world and emphasizes the brevity of human life (verses 2-6). The psalmist reflects on the sinful nature of humanity and the consequences of God’s anger and wrath (verses 7-11).

In verse 11, Moses poses a rhetorical question, asking, “Who knoweth the power of thine anger?” This question acknowledges the incomprehensible magnitude of God’s anger and the consequences that follow. It emphasizes the fact that no one can fully grasp the extent of God’s wrath. It speaks to the awesome power and sovereignty of God, highlighting the importance of reverence and awe in our relationship with Him.

The latter part of the verse states, “even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.” This phrase suggests a parallel between the fear of God and the outpouring of His wrath. It implies that the intensity of God’s wrath corresponds to the reverence and fear due to Him. The fear of God is not based on terror or dread, but rather on an acknowledgment of His holiness, justice, and power.

Overall, Psalm 90:11 reminds us of the importance of recognizing the awesome power and righteous anger of God. It calls us to approach God with reverence and fear, understanding that His wrath is not to be taken lightly. While the verse portrays the consequences of God’s anger, it is essential to remember that God is also a God of love, mercy, and grace. His wrath is balanced by His compassion and the opportunity for repentance and forgiveness.

As we study this verse, it encourages us to develop a deep reverence for God and a sincere desire to live according to His ways. It reminds us of the need to approach Him with humility, seeking His mercy and forgiveness, and striving to align our lives with His will.
