Psalms 90:10
The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
Psalms 90:10 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 90 is a prayer of Moses, the man of God. It reflects on the eternal nature of God and the brevity and frailty of human life. Moses contrasts the everlasting existence of God with the limited lifespan of humans on earth. This verse gives a realistic assessment of human mortality, calling for humility and dependence on God.
Meaning
The verse begins by describing the typical lifespan as “threescore years and ten” (70 years) or “fourscore years” (80 years) if one is strong. This was a general estimate of life expectancy in ancient times, not a promise for every individual. It highlights the relatively short duration of our earthly existence.
Moses acknowledges that even the extended years of the strong are marked by “labour and sorrow.” This phrase reflects the toil and trouble that characterize human existence in a fallen world. As we age, physical strength diminishes, and life can be filled with challenges and hardships.
The verse concludes with the sobering reality that life is “soon cut off, and we fly away.” This imagery conveys the suddenness and finality of death. It can be understood as the departure of the soul from the body at death, entering into eternity.
Biblical connections
The immediate context of Psalm 90:12—”So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom“—provides the intended response to this brevity. It is a prayer for divine wisdom to live rightly in light of life’s shortness. This connection shows that the verse is not meant to discourage but to lead us to seek God’s guidance.
Application
Understanding the brevity of life encourages us to have a proper perspective on the limited time we have on earth. It inspires us to live with purpose, seek a relationship with God, and consider our eternal destiny beyond this earthly existence.
Reflecting on the transient nature of life should remind us of our own mortality. It can motivate us to seek God’s wisdom and guidance in order to make the most of our time here. By aligning ourselves with God’s purposes, we can find fulfilment and make a positive impact during our brief stay on earth.
While our earthly life is temporary, as believers, we have the hope of eternal life with God. This verse prompts us to consider our eternal destination and strive to live in a way that aligns with God’s will, knowing that our true home is with Him.
Reflection
The tone of this verse is sober and reflective, urging us to consider the brevity of life and the importance of wisdom. It does not promise a specific lifespan but speaks of the general human condition. This verse is a foundational text for understanding the biblical view of human mortality and the need for divine wisdom. The brevity of life is not a cause for despair but a call to live each day with eternal perspective, trusting in God’s mercy and grace.
