Psalms 92:10
“But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.”
Context of the Verse:Psalm 92 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving, commonly attributed to King David. It is known as a psalm for the Sabbath day, emphasizing the importance of giving thanks to God for His steadfast love and faithfulness.
Symbolism of the Horn:In biblical times, the horn was a symbol of strength, power, and honour. It represents a person’s dignity and authority. Here, the psalmist speaks metaphorically of their horn being exalted like the horn of a wild ox, often translated as a unicorn in the KJV. This imagery suggests that God will lift them up, granting them strength, honour, and victory.
Anointed with Fresh Oil:Anointing with oil was a significant ritual in the Old Testament, symbolising the pouring out of God’s blessing, consecration, and the presence of the Holy Spirit. Anointing with fresh oil implies a continuous renewal and empowerment by God. The psalmist expresses confidence that God will anoint them afresh, enabling them to fulfil their purpose and walk in His favour.
Application for Believers:Psalm 92:10 carries spiritual principles that can be applied to the lives of believers today:
- a) God’s Empowerment: Just as the psalmist trusted in God to exalt their horn and anoint them with fresh oil, believers can rely on God’s strength and power to overcome challenges and fulfil their purpose.
- b) God’s Renewal: The concept of fresh oil indicates that God’s blessings and anointing are not limited to a one-time experience. Instead, believers can seek God’s continual renewal and infilling of the Holy Spirit to stay spiritually vibrant and effective.
- c) God’s Provision: The imagery of the horn being exalted reflects God’s provision and elevation of His people. As believers trust in Him, He lifts them up, giving them the honour and authority they need to impact their spheres of influence.
- d) Gratitude and Praise: This psalm serves as a reminder to give thanks and praise to God. It encourages believers to acknowledge His faithfulness and goodness in their lives and to express gratitude for His empowering presence.
In summary, Psalm 92:10 portrays the psalmist’s trust in God’s empowerment, provision, and renewal. It reminds believers that God exalts and anoints them with fresh oil, enabling them to fulfil their purpose and walk in His favour. This verse encourages gratitude and praise, highlighting the ongoing relationship between believers and their faithful God.
