Psalms 105:31

Posted on 18 May at 11:23

He spake, and there came diuers sorts of flies: and lice in all their coasts. Psalms 105:31 (KJV)

Context: Psalm 105 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving to God for His faithfulness to His people throughout history. It recounts events from Abraham through the Israelites’ deliverance from Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land.

Historical Background: This verse refers to one of the plagues that God sent upon Egypt during the time of Moses. The plagues were divine judgments that compelled Pharaoh to release the Israelites. Psalm 105:31 mentions both flies and lice, which correspond to the third and fourth plagues recorded in Exodus.

Significance: The plagues in Egypt demonstrate God’s power, His ability to deliver His people, and His sovereignty over all creation. Each plague challenged and undermined the Egyptian gods, showing that the God of Israel, Yahweh, is the one true God.

Symbolism and Meaning: Flies and lice are often associated with impurity and decay. Their presence brought great discomfort to the Egyptians, illustrating God’s supremacy over the land and even over the smallest creatures.

Lessons and Application:

  • God’s Sovereignty – Psalm 105:31 reminds us that the Almighty has authority over every aspect of creation, even the tiniest creatures, highlighting His power to act in any situation.
  • God’s Judgment and Deliverance – The Egyptian plagues reveal God’s judgment upon oppressors and His desire to rescue His chosen ones, assuring us that He intervenes when His people cry out.
  • Trusting in God’s Promises – As we reflect on Psalm 105, we see God’s faithful fulfillment of His promises, encouraging us to trust that He can deliver us from any difficulty today.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and explore the entire psalm for a richer understanding. Through diligent study of God’s Word we gain deeper insight into His character, His dealings with humanity, and His enduring faithfulness throughout history.
