Psalms 106:38
And shed innocent blood, euen the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whome they sacrificed vnto the idoles of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood. Psalms 106:38 (KJV)
Context: Psalm 106 is a historical psalm that recounts the faithfulness of God and the unfaithfulness of the Israelites throughout their history. It highlights the pattern of Israel’s disobedience, rebellion, and subsequent restoration by God. This verse specifically refers to the sins committed by the Israelites both during their time in the wilderness and later in the Promised Land. It points to the specific sin of idolatry in which they sacrificed their own children to the pagan gods of Canaan. The idolatrous practices of the Canaanite nations involved worship of false gods through various rituals, including child sacrifice. These pagan religions were characterized by immorality, violence, and the shedding of innocent blood. God had explicitly forbidden such practices among His people (Leviticus 18:21; Deuteronomy 12:31). The shedding of innocent blood through the sacrifice of children was a heinous sin that polluted the land. God, who is holy and just, could not tolerate such wickedness, and the Israelites’ disobedience brought severe consequences, including divine judgment and the defilement of the land they were meant to inherit. This verse serves as a reminder of the destructive power of idolatry and the consequences of turning away from God. While child sacrifice is not a prevalent practice in modern society, the principle behind it still applies; we are called to examine our own lives and ensure that nothing takes the place of God in our hearts and priorities. Despite the Israelites’ sins, God remained merciful and faithful to His covenant with them. The subsequent verses in Psalm 106 highlight how God repeatedly forgave and rescued His people, demonstrating His steadfast love and faithfulness. This reflects God’s character throughout the Bible and offers hope for forgiveness and restoration for those who turn back to Him.
