Psalms 108:2

Awake psaltery and harpe: I my selfe will awake early. Psalms 108:2 (KJV)

The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic songs and prayers that express a wide range of human emotions and experiences. Psalm 108 is attributed to David and is classified as a psalm of praise. In this verse the psalmist calls for the awakening of musical instruments, specifically the psaltery and the harp. The psaltery was a stringed instrument, comparable to a zither or guitar, without frets or a neck, while the harp (kinnor) was a larger lyre‑type instrument whose strings were plucked. By invoking these instruments the psalmist expresses a desire to praise and worship God through music.

The call to awake the instruments also serves as a metaphorical invitation for the psalmist’s heart and spirit to be awakened to God’s presence. Just as the instruments are brought to life to create beautiful music, the psalmist longs for his own soul to be stirred into offering sincere praise.

Personal responsibility is highlighted as the psalmist declares, “I myself will awake early.” In biblical culture the early morning hours were closely associated with prayer and devotion. By rising early, the psalmist demonstrates an intentional pursuit of God’s presence and a commitment to prioritize worship above daily concerns.

The application of this verse extends to every believer. It encourages active engagement in praise and worship, not only through vocal expression but also through artistic gifts such as music, poetry, or visual art. Worship is therefore not solely the responsibility of musicians and worship leaders; it is a personal and individual response to God’s goodness and faithfulness.

Prioritising God is a central theme. The psalmist’s decision to awaken early underscores the importance of giving God the first and best part of our day, challenging us to place our relationship with Him above all else and to seek Him diligently.

Finally, the act of worship is rooted in gratitude and joy. As we awaken our hearts to God’s presence, we are filled with thankfulness for His blessings and experience the overwhelming joy that comes from knowing Him.
