Psalms 113:1

Posted on 18 May at 15:13

“Praise ye the LORD. Praise, O ye servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD.”

1. Context and Background:Psalm 113 is one of the Hallel Psalms (Psalms 113-118), which are traditionally recited or sung during Jewish festivals such as Passover, Sukkot, and Hanukkah. This psalm is a call to praise and worship the Lord, and it emphasizes the greatness and sovereignty of God.

2. Praise the LORD:The psalm begins with the Hebrew phrase “Hallelujah” or “Praise ye the LORD.” This is an exhortation to the people of God to offer praise and adoration to the Lord. Praise is an essential aspect of our relationship with God. It involves expressing gratitude, admiration, and worship for who God is and what He has done.

3. Praise, O ye servants of the LORD:The psalmist specifically addresses the servants of the LORD, calling them to praise His name. In the Old Testament, the term “servants of the LORD” often referred to the Israelites, who were chosen by God to fulfill His purposes and be a light to the nations. As believers in Christ today, we are also considered servants of the Lord, called to serve and worship Him.

4. Praise the name of the LORD:The psalmist emphasizes the importance of praising the name of the LORD. In biblical times, a person’s name represented their character, nature, and authority. By praising the name of the LORD, we acknowledge His attributes, such as His holiness, love, faithfulness, and power. It is through His name that God reveals Himself to us and accomplishes His work.

5. Application:Psalm 113:1 encourages us to engage in a lifestyle of praise. As servants of the Lord, we are called to offer heartfelt worship and adoration to Him. Praise is not limited to specific times or places but should be a continuous expression of our gratitude and reverence for God.

We can praise God by:

  • a) Acknowledging His attributes and character.
  • b) Expressing gratitude for His blessings and provision.
  • c) Praising Him for His faithfulness and love.
  • d) Worshiping Him through music, song, and prayer.
  • e) Testifying and sharing about His goodness with others.
  • f) Living in obedience to His Word.

Remember that praising God not only honors Him but also uplifts our own spirits and strengthens our faith.
