Psalms 112:10

Posted on 18 May at 15:13

“The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.”

Context:Understanding the Psalm

Psalm 112 is a wisdom psalm that celebrates the blessedness of the righteous. It contrasts the righteous with the wicked, highlighting the rewards and consequences of their respective ways of life. The psalm emphasizes that those who fear and obey the Lord will be blessed and will have a lasting legacy.

The Wicked’s Reaction: In verse 10, it says, “The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away.” This verse describes the reaction of the wicked when they observe the blessedness and prosperity of the righteous. The term “gnash with his teeth” conveys a sense of anger, frustration, and envy. The wicked are vexed by the fact that the righteous are prospering and enjoying the favour of God.

The Desire of the Wicked: The verse continues, stating, “The desire of the wicked shall perish.” This phrase suggests that the wicked, despite their longing for worldly success, wealth, or power, will ultimately see their desires come to nothing. The wicked may pursue material gain and engage in unjust practices, but their aspirations and ambitions will not be fulfilled in the end. Their pursuits are in contrast to the righteous, whose desires align with God’s will.

Lessons and Application: a. Righteousness brings blessing: The psalm as a whole conveys the message that those who fear the Lord, delight in His commandments, and live righteously will experience His blessings in various aspects of life. Their blessings extend beyond material wealth to include spiritual well-being, security, and an enduring legacy.

b. The consequences of wickedness: The verse highlights the fleeting nature of the wicked’s desires and the frustration they experience when they witness the prosperity of the righteous. It serves as a reminder that pursuing worldly gain through unjust means ultimately leads to disappointment, frustration, and destruction.

c. Trusting in God’s justice: The psalm emphasizes that God is ultimately in control, and He will bring justice to the wicked. As believers, we are encouraged to trust in God’s sovereignty and have confidence that He will address the injustices we witness in the world.

d. The contrast between the righteous and the wicked: Psalm 112 draws a clear distinction between the righteous and the wicked, highlighting the divergent paths they choose and the outcomes they experience. It encourages us to strive for righteousness and align our desires with God’s will, knowing that He rewards those who fear Him.

Overall, Psalm 112:10 reminds us that the pursuit of righteousness brings lasting blessings, while the desires of the wicked will ultimately perish. It encourages us to place our trust in God, knowing that He upholds justice and rewards those who walk in His ways.
