Listen to this article

“He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.”

1. Context:To understand the meaning of this verse, it is important to consider its context within the entire psalm. Psalm 112 is a wisdom psalm that praises the blessings and rewards of the righteous person who fears the Lord and delights in His commandments. The psalmist highlights the characteristics and actions of the righteous throughout the entire psalm.

2. Generosity and Compassion:The verse begins by emphasizing the righteous person’s generosity and compassion towards the poor. “He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor.” The righteous individual is described as one who freely shares his blessings, resources, and wealth with those in need. This verse underscores the importance of generosity and the responsibility believers have to help those who are less fortunate.

3. Enduring Righteousness:The verse continues by stating, “his righteousness endureth forever.” This phrase highlights the eternal nature of the righteousness displayed by the righteous person. It signifies that the righteous person’s acts of kindness and generosity are not temporary or fleeting but are rooted in a consistent lifestyle of righteousness. The righteous person’s commitment to doing what is right and just continues to endure and bring blessings.

4. Exaltation and Honor:The verse concludes by stating, “his horn shall be exalted with honour.” The horn symbolizes strength and power in biblical imagery. This phrase signifies that the righteous person will be exalted and honored. It suggests that their righteous actions will not go unnoticed or unrewarded by God. The exaltation and honor mentioned here could refer to the recognition, blessings, and favor that God bestows upon the righteous.

Application:

  • a) Generosity and Compassion:As believers, we should cultivate a heart of generosity and compassion towards the poor and needy. This verse encourages us to willingly share our resources and help those who are less fortunate. It reminds us of our responsibility to care for the vulnerable and extend a helping hand to those in need.
  • b) Consistent Righteousness:The verse emphasizes the enduring nature of righteousness. It reminds us that our acts of righteousness should not be occasional or sporadic but should be a consistent reflection of our relationship with God. Our commitment to righteousness should be unwavering, impacting our thoughts, words, and deeds.
  • c) Trust in God’s Reward:The promise of exaltation and honor in this verse encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness and the rewards He bestows upon the righteous. Although earthly recognition or honor may not always be immediate or visible, we can trust that God sees our righteous actions and will reward them according to His perfect timing and purposes.
