Psalms 117:1

O praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.

Psalms 117:1 (KJV)

Psalm 117 is the shortest chapter in the Bible, with only two verses. Yet it carries a message that reaches the whole world. The psalmist calls not only Israel but every nation and every people to praise the Lord. This call goes beyond the borders of Israel, showing that worship of God is for all humanity.

The word “praise” in Hebrew means to boast in or commend God’s excellence. The second command, “praise him,” uses another word that means to extol or lift God high. Together they urge every person to declare God’s worth. The name “LORD” in capital letters is the divine name Yahweh, the covenant God of Israel. So the nations are summoned to praise the God who revealed Himself to Israel, not a vague or unknown deity.

The phrase “all ye nations” and “all ye people” leaves no one out. The invitation is not limited by ethnicity, nationality, or social standing. Every individual, regardless of background, is welcomed to worship. This universal call reflects God’s love for all and His desire that every people group know Him.

The next verse, Psalm 117:2, gives the reason for this global praise: God’s merciful kindness is great toward us, and His truth endures forever. The nations are not called to praise an abstract idea but to respond to God’s faithful love. The Apostle Paul quotes this psalm in Romans 15:11 as proof that the Gentiles would glorify God for His mercy. The early church saw this verse as a promise that the Gospel would reach all peoples.

This verse reminds us that worship is both a privilege and a duty for every people group. It encourages us to join in praise actively, expressing gratitude for God’s goodness, faithfulness, and salvation. It also challenges us to see that God’s saving purpose has always been global. We can pray for and support the spread of the Gospel to every nation, knowing that God calls all people to Himself.

Psalm 117:1 is a powerful call that breaks down walls between peoples. It invites every nation to come together in worship, acknowledging the one true God. As we praise Him, we join a chorus that spans the earth and echoes through all generations.
