Psalms 119:24
Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counsellors.
Psalms 119:24 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible. It is a carefully ordered song that praises God’s Word from beginning to end. The writer speaks as someone who faces opposition and needs steady guidance. In this setting, he does not turn to human advisors alone. He turns to the testimonies of the Lord, the truths God has revealed and confirmed.
Meaning
The word “testimonies” points to God’s own witness about Himself, His commands, and His promises. The psalmist calls these testimonies his “delight.” This is not cold respect or reluctant obedience. It is warm joy and deep satisfaction. He finds pleasure in what God has spoken, even when life is hard.
Then he gives these testimonies a personal role: they are his “counsellors.” A counsellor is someone you trust to guide your decisions. The psalmist does not merely admire God’s Word from a distance. He consults it, listens to it, and lets it shape his choices. The plural “counsellors” suggests that God’s many testimonies together give complete and reliable wisdom. This is not a mere intellectual appreciation but a deep, personal joy and satisfaction found in meditating on and obeying God’s Word.
Biblical connections
This verse joins two ideas that appear together throughout Psalm 119: loving God’s Word and living by it. The same chapter says the psalmist has hidden God’s word in his heart so that he might not sin against God (Psalm 119:11). That inner delight leads to outward obedience. Here, delight and counsel work together. Joy in God’s testimonies makes the psalmist ready to receive their direction.
Application
We can treat Scripture the same way. When we face a decision, we can ask what God has already testified in His Word. The Bible gives principles for honesty, love, forgiveness, and wisdom. It does not answer every small question directly, but it trains our thinking so we can choose well.
We can also grow in delight. Reading the Bible becomes easier when we expect to meet God in it. We can pray before we read, asking Him to make His testimonies sweet to us. Over time, what once felt like duty can become genuine joy. This verse models a healthy Christian approach to Scripture: it is to be loved and enjoyed, and it is to be the guide for our lives.
Delight in God’s Word: approach it as a treasure, not a task.
Seek its counsel: let Scripture guide your decisions and correct your thinking.
Build a personal relationship with God through His testimonies.
Reflection
Do we see God’s testimonies as our delight? Do we treat them as trusted counsellors? The psalmist’s words invite us to a closer walk with God, where His Word is both the joy of our hearts and the light for our path.
