Psalms 119:85

The proud haue digged pittes for me: which are not after thy law. Psalms 119:85 (KJV)

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in Scripture and is celebrated for its focus on the beauty, necessity, and power of God’s law and Word. Verse 85 belongs to the section associated with the Hebrew letter “Kaph” (verses 81‑88), a portion that conveys the psalmist’s deep distress and sense of affliction as he confronts hostile forces.

“The proud” denotes those who are arrogant, boastful, and opposed to God’s ways. The psalmist describes people who take pride in their wickedness and who actively seek to harm him—enemies, oppressors, or false accusers whose attitudes reveal a blatant disregard for God’s righteous standards.

The expression “digged pits” portrays the malicious schemes and traps that the proud have prepared. Like a hunter who digs a pit to ensnare an animal, these adversaries plot to entangle the psalmist through lies, deceit, persecution, or any other means designed to cause him injury.

A key contrast is drawn between the proud’s actions and the character of God’s law. The pits they have dug are “not after thy law,” meaning they are contrary to God’s commandments and principles. Their motives are rooted in self‑interest, pride, and wickedness rather than in reverence for divine instruction.

Lessons for Believers:

  • (a) Opposition and Persecution – The psalmist’s experience mirrors the reality that believers may face hostility from those who reject God’s ways. Faithfulness requires steadfastness and confidence that such opposition will not deter one’s devotion.
  • (b) Trusting in God’s Law – Rather than seeking revenge or relying on personal strength, the psalmist finds solace in God’s law. Believers can draw comfort and guidance from Scripture’s unchanging truth, trusting in God’s wisdom and promises even amid adversity.
  • (c) God’s Deliverance – Throughout Psalm 119 the psalmist repeatedly affirms his trust in God’s deliverance. Despite the proud’s schemes, he remains confident that God will rescue him, reminding believers to place their hope in God’s faithfulness, knowing He can overcome any obstacle or opposition.
