Psalms 119:86

Listen to this article

“All thy commandments are faithful: they persecute me wrongfully; help thou me.”

This verse is taken from the longest chapter in the Bible, Psalm 119, which is known for the emphasis on the importance of God’s Word and the psalmist’s deep love for God’s commandments.

Let’s break down this verse and explore its meaning and significance.

“All thy commandments are faithful”: Here, the psalmist acknowledges that God’s commandments are faithful. The word “faithful” implies that God’s commandments are reliable, trustworthy, and consistent. They reflect the unchanging character of God Himself. The psalmist recognizes the value and importance of following God’s commandments as a way to live a life of faithfulness and righteousness.

“They persecute me wrongfully”: In this part of the verse, the psalmist expresses his personal experience of being wrongfully persecuted. The psalmist may have faced opposition, hostility, or unfair treatment from others, possibly because of his commitment to obeying God’s commandments. This reveals a common struggle for believers throughout history—standing for truth and righteousness can sometimes result in mistreatment or persecution.

“Help thou me”: The psalmist appeals to God for help in the face of wrongful persecution. This plea acknowledges that only God has the power to provide assistance and deliverance. The psalmist recognizes his dependence on God and his need for divine intervention in difficult circumstances. It is an expression of trust and reliance on God’s unfailing love and faithfulness.

In the broader context of Psalm 119, this verse is part of a section dedicated to the theme of affliction and opposition faced by the psalmist. Throughout the psalm, the author repeatedly affirms his commitment to God’s law and seeks God’s guidance, protection, and deliverance in the midst of challenges.

The verse also reflects a theme found in the New Testament, where Jesus Himself warned His disciples about the possibility of persecution and mistreatment for the sake of righteousness (e.g., Matthew 5:10‑12; John 15:20). It serves as a reminder that following God’s commandments may not always be easy, but God remains faithful and offers His help and strength to those who trust in Him.

In summary, Psalm 119:86 highlights the faithfulness of God’s commandments, acknowledges wrongful persecution faced by the psalmist, and seeks God’s help in times of difficulty. It encourages believers to remain faithful to God’s Word and to trust in His unwavering faithfulness and provision, even in the face of opposition or mistreatment.
