Psalms 123:3

Listen to this article

“Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.”

Context:Psalm 123 is one of the fifteen “Songs of Ascents” (Psalms 120-134) traditionally sung by Jewish pilgrims as they ascended to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. This particular psalm is attributed to an anonymous psalmist who expresses his longing for God’s mercy and deliverance.

Cry for mercy:The psalmist’s plea for mercy is repeated twice for emphasis, indicating the urgent need and deep desire for divine intervention. The word “mercy” in Hebrew is “chanan,” which means to show favor, kindness, or compassion.

The psalmist acknowledges their dependence on God’s mercy and humbly beseeches the Lord to look upon their situation with compassion.

Contempt and opposition:The psalmist describes their current state as being “exceedingly filled with contempt.” This suggests that they are experiencing intense scorn, ridicule, and rejection from their enemies or those who oppose them. The contempt could be due to various reasons, such as their faith, their allegiance to God, or their commitment to righteousness.

Reflection on the human condition:This verse reminds us of the reality that God’s people may face contempt or opposition in the world. As believers, we may encounter situations where our faith is mocked or belittled. However, the psalmist does not respond with bitterness or revenge but rather turns to God for mercy and deliverance.

Application:Humility and dependence on God:This verse teaches us to approach God with humility, acknowledging our need for His mercy and intervention in challenging circumstances. We are reminded that our strength and deliverance come from God alone. Trusting in God’s character:The psalmist’s cry for mercy is rooted in their understanding of God’s compassionate nature. We can take comfort in knowing that God is merciful, gracious, and loving towards His people. Even when we face contempt or opposition, we can trust that God sees our situation and will provide comfort and help. Responding to contempt:When we encounter contempt or opposition, our response should not be driven by anger or retaliation. Instead, we can follow the psalmist’s example by seeking God’s mercy and entrusting our situation to Him. We can pray for those who oppose us and demonstrate God’s love and grace in our actions.
