Posted on 18 May at 14:11
Listen to this article

“Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.”

Historical context:Psalm 124 is attributed to King David, and it is one of the songs of ascent, which were sung by the Israelites as they ascended to Jerusalem for worship. This particular psalm reflects on the deliverance and protection of God throughout Israel’s history.

  • Symbolism of “proud waters”:
    • In this verse, the “proud waters” symbolize overwhelming and destructive forces or enemies.
    • Water often symbolizes chaos, turmoil, or overwhelming circumstances in the Bible. It represents situations that threaten to overpower or engulf us.
  • Understanding the phrase “gone over our soul”:
    • “Gone over our soul” indicates the severity and extent of the threat. It suggests that the danger was not merely external but also affected their inner being, their very soul.
    • The psalmist acknowledges that the threat was so intense that it threatened their very existence and wellbeing.
