Listen to this article

“Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”

1. Context: Psalm 124 is attributed to King David and is one of the songs of ascent (Psalm 120-134) traditionally sung by pilgrims as they ascended to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. This particular psalm expresses gratitude to God for deliverance from enemies who sought to destroy Israel. It emphasizes the Lord’s role as their help and the Creator of heaven and earth.

The psalmist begins by acknowledging that if it hadn’t been for the Lord, Israel would have been utterly overwhelmed and swallowed up by their enemies. They recognize their dependency on God’s intervention and deliverance. This verse reassures the readers that their help comes from the Lord alone. It highlights the importance of seeking God for assistance in times of trouble rather than relying solely on human strength or resources. God is the ultimate source of help and is capable of intervening on behalf of His people.

2. Our Help: The psalmist begins by acknowledging that if it hadn’t been for the Lord, Israel would have been utterly overwhelmed and swallowed up by their enemies.

3. The Name of the Lord: The phrase “the name of the Lord” refers to God’s character, authority, and reputation. In the Bible, a person’s name often represents their nature or essence. The name of the Lord embodies His power, sovereignty, and faithfulness. Calling upon His name signifies calling upon His attributes and seeking His presence and aid. Trusting in the name of the Lord implies relying on His nature and relying on His promises.

4. The Creator of Heaven and Earth: The verse concludes by emphasizing the grandeur and authority of God as the Creator of heaven and earth. By acknowledging God’s role as the Creator, the psalmist recognizes that God has the power to intervene in the affairs of His creation. It underscores the vastness of God’s dominion and highlights His ability to act on behalf of His people. This reminder reinforces the psalmist’s confidence that if God is capable of creating and sustaining the entire universe, He is surely capable of protecting and delivering His chosen people.
