Psalms 124:7

Listen to this article

Our soule is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the foulers; the snare is broken, and we are escaped. Psalms 124:7 (KJV)

Context: Psalms 124 is attributed to King David and is one of the Psalms of Ascent, traditionally believed to be sung by pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem for the feasts. This particular psalm reflects on God’s deliverance and protection for the people of Israel.

Symbolism of the bird and the snare: In verse 7 the psalmist employs powerful imagery to describe the deliverance of their soul. The “bird out of the snare” symbolizes the escape from a trap or danger. In this case the “snare” represents the schemes and plots of the enemies of God’s people, who sought to ensnare them and bring them harm. The bird’s escape signifies a miraculous rescue from imminent danger.

Divine intervention and deliverance: The psalmist acknowledges that it is God who has delivered them from the snare of the fowlers. The term “fowlers” refers to those who set traps to catch birds and represents the enemies or adversaries who had plotted to harm the people of Israel. The fact that the snare is broken emphasizes the complete and decisive victory that God has achieved on behalf of His people.

Spiritual application: This verse holds broader spiritual implications for believers today. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness, His power to rescue us from traps and snares, and His ability to bring us out of challenging circumstances. It encourages us to trust in God’s deliverance and to rely on Him during times of trouble. Just as the bird was released from the snare, we can find freedom from the entanglements of sin, the snares of the enemy, and the trials of life through our relationship with God.

Gratitude and praise: The psalmist’s response to God’s deliverance is one of gratitude and praise. The imagery in this verse portrays a joyous celebration of freedom and victory. Likewise, when God delivers us from the snares and challenges we face, we should respond with thanksgiving, worship, and praise, recognizing His mighty hand at work in our lives.
