Psalms 124:3
Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:
Psalms 124:3 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 124 is one of the Songs of Ascents, sung by Israel as they traveled to worship in Jerusalem. Although the exact event is not named, the psalm looks back to a time when enemies attacked with fierce anger. Verses 1 and 2 set the condition: if the Lord had not been on Israel’s side, the nation would have been overwhelmed. Verse 3 then describes how close that destruction truly was.
Meaning
The words “swallowed us up quick” picture an enemy devouring its prey while the victim is still alive. The Hebrew word for “quick” means “alive,” showing the total and sudden nature of the threat. The phrase “when their wrath was kindled against us” compares the enemies’ anger to a fire that burns out of control. Human wrath is cruel and fierce, and only God can restrain it. Without His help, Israel would have been completely destroyed.
Biblical connections
The next verses, Psalm 124:4-5, use flood and torrent imagery to describe the same danger. This verse also implies that God’s people are like sheep among wolves, vulnerable and needing a shepherd’s protection. The deliverance is credited entirely to the Lord, who is called the Maker of heaven and earth in Psalm 124:8.
Application
This verse teaches believers to recognize their complete dependence on God in times of danger. When threats seem overwhelming, we can pray for His help and trust that He is able to rescue us from both physical and spiritual enemies. God’s protective hand can turn what looks like certain ruin into survival and victory.
Reflection
Consider a moment when you felt trapped by opposition or fear. This verse reminds us that God’s power is greater than any human anger. We can give Him praise for past deliverance and hold fast to the hope that He will save us again.
