If it had not bene the Lord, who was on our side, when men rose vp against vs: Psalms 124:2 (KJV)

The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic prayers, praises, and expressions of faith, and Psalm 124 is traditionally ascribed to David. It is a “Song of Ascents” that serves as a psalm of thanksgiving, celebrating God’s deliverance and protection of His people.

The verse begins by acknowledging the presence of the LORD in the lives of His people. It highlights the significance of God’s intervention and protection in times of trouble and emphasizes the vital role that God plays, particularly when facing opposition and adversity.

The phrasing “If it had not been the LORD who was on our side…” underscores the importance of God’s presence and support. It reminds us that without God’s intervention the outcome would have been vastly different, and that we are not alone in our struggles because the LORD stands by our side.

The psalm also mentions the opposition faced by God’s people, whether from physical enemies or spiritual adversaries. The psalmist affirms that the LORD keeps us from the hand of our enemies, and that His presence makes all the difference in overcoming these adversities.

This passage reflects on moments when God intervened and delivered His people from their foes. It testifies to God’s faithfulness and serves as a reminder to trust in Him during challenging times.

Psalm 124:2 therefore encourages us to rely on the LORD’s strength in times of trouble, to trust in Him as the source of deliverance and protection, and to offer gratitude for the many times He has already rescued us from our enemies.
