“If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;”

Psalm 124:1 (KJV) says, “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, now may Israel say.”

Historical Context:Psalm 124 is attributed to King David and is part of a collection known as the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134). These psalms were likely sung by the Israelites as they made their way to Jerusalem for the annual feasts.

  • Acknowledging God’s Help:

The opening verse of Psalm 124 expresses gratitude and acknowledges God’s intervention on behalf of the nation of Israel. The phrase, “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,” highlights the Israelites’ recognition that their survival and victories were only possible because of God’s active involvement and protection.

A Grateful Declaration:The phrase “now may Israel say” suggests that the psalmist invites the nation of Israel to join in proclaiming this truth. It is an acknowledgment of the Lord’s faithfulness and an invitation to the people to give thanks for His continuous presence and support.

Reflecting on God’s Deliverance:As we continue reading the following verses in Psalm 124, we see the psalmist reflecting on specific instances where God’s intervention preserved Israel from danger. The psalmist emphasizes that if God had not been with them, their enemies would have overwhelmed and swallowed them up.

Application:

  • Psalm 124:1 serves as a reminder to us as believers that our lives are ultimately in God’s hands. It is a call to acknowledge God’s active involvement in our lives and to express gratitude for His protection and deliverance. Like the nation of Israel, we can reflect on our past experiences and recognize how God has been faithful to us, guiding us through trials and overcoming challenges.

This verse also encourages us to trust in the Lord’s continued presence and support. It reminds us that our victories and successes are not solely dependent on our own abilities or strength but on God’s grace and intervention.

In summary, Psalm 124:1 invites us to declare with gratitude that without the Lord on our side, we would not have been able to overcome the challenges we face. It encourages us to reflect on God’s faithfulness in the past, trust in His presence in the present, and confidently move forward, knowing that He is our ultimate source of help and protection.
