Psalms 119:118

Posted on 18 May at 15:12

“Thou hast trodden down all them that err from thy statutes: for their deceit is falsehood.”

Certainly! Let’s do a Bible study on Psalm 119:118 in the King James Version: Psalm 119:118 (KJV) says, “Thou hast trodden down all them that err from thy statutes: for their deceit is falsehood.”

Context: Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the book of Psalms and is known for its focus on the beauty and importance of God’s law. The psalm is divided into twenty-two sections, each corresponding to a letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and each section contains eight verses. This particular verse is found in the section titled “Samekh,” which represents the fifteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

Understanding the verse:

– “Thou hast trodden down all them that err from thy statutes”: The psalmist acknowledges that God has dealt with those who have strayed from His statutes. The phrase “trodden down” suggests that God has brought judgment upon those who have deviated from His commandments.

– “For their deceit is falsehood”: The reason for God’s judgment is that the deceit of those who have turned away from God’s statutes is based on falsehood or lies. Their actions and teachings are not aligned with God’s truth.

Key themes:

– God’s judgment: The verse highlights God’s role as the righteous judge who deals with those who stray from His ways. It underscores the importance of obedience to God’s statutes.

– Deceit and falsehood: The verse emphasizes the negative consequences of deception and falsehood. Those who distort God’s truth and lead others astray will ultimately face God’s judgment.

Application:

– Commitment to God’s Word: This verse reminds us of the significance of adhering to God’s statutes and living according to His truth. It encourages us to cultivate a deep love for His Word and seek to align our lives with His commands.

– Avoiding deception: The verse serves as a warning against deceit and falsehood. It reminds us to be discerning and cautious of teachings or ideologies that contradict God’s truth. We should seek to live in integrity and avoid misleading others.

  • How committed am I to studying and obeying God’s statutes?
  • Am I discerning enough to identify teachings or ideologies that are based on falsehood?
  • Do I actively seek God’s truth and align my life with His commands?
