Thy testimonies that thou hast commaunded, are righteous: and very faithfull. Psalms 119:138 (KJV)

that thou hast commanded

are righteous and very faithful. Psalms 119:138 (KJV)

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in Scripture and is celebrated for its focus on the greatness and value of God’s Word. The psalmist declares a deep love for God’s law and stresses the importance of obeying it. Each section of the psalm follows an acrostic pattern, with every verse in a section beginning with the same Hebrew letter, underscoring the careful design of the composition.

The term “testimonies” in this context refers to God’s laws, commandments, and decrees—the teachings and instructions given to guide His people in righteous living. These testimonies constitute the divine revelation of God’s will and character, providing moral and spiritual direction for the community of believers.

The psalmist affirms that the testimonies God has commanded are righteous. Righteousness is a central attribute of God’s nature, and His statutes reflect His perfect holiness and justice. They are not arbitrary rules but are grounded in His holy character, offering a clear standard for moral conduct and outlining the path of righteousness for His people.

He also acknowledges that God’s testimonies are very faithful. God’s faithfulness denotes His reliability and steadfastness in keeping His promises. The testimonies are trustworthy and dependable, having stood the test of time and proving true throughout history. This faithfulness is evident in the consistent application of the statutes and their enduring relevance for every generation.

Application for believers:

  • a. The importance of valuing God’s Word: As the psalmist revered God’s testimonies, we too should recognize the supreme value of Scripture as the means by which God reveals Himself and His will.
  • b. The righteousness of God’s commands: We can trust that God’s commandments are righteous and designed to guide us toward a fulfilling, godly life, rather than being burdensome restrictions.
  • c. The faithfulness of God’s promises: The testimonies have proven faithful throughout history, giving us confidence that God will remain true to His promises and principles today and forever.
