Psalms 119:139

Posted on 18 May at 15:12

“My zeal hath consumed me, because mine enemies have forgotten thy words.”

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Book of Psalms and consists of 176 verses. It is a beautiful meditation on the Word of God, expressing the psalmist’s love and devotion to God’s law. In verse 139, the psalmist writes:

The psalmist starts by expressing their fervent zeal for God’s Word. The word “zeal” refers to an intense enthusiasm or passion. It signifies the psalmist’s deep love and devotion for the commands and teachings of God.

Zeal for God’s Word:The psalmist starts by expressing their fervent zeal for God’s Word. The word “zeal” refers to an intense enthusiasm or passion. It signifies the psalmist’s deep love and devotion for the commands and teachings of God. This highlights the importance of having a passionate and fervent attitude towards God’s Word in our own lives.

Consumed by Zeal:The psalmist states that their zeal has consumed them. This suggests that the psalmist’s passion for God’s Word has completely occupied their thoughts and emotions. It has become the driving force in their life, dominating their entire being. This kind of all-consuming zeal demonstrates the psalmist’s commitment and dedication to the Lord’s precepts.

Enemies’ Disregard for God’s Word:The psalmist points out that their enemies have forgotten God’s words. Here, the psalmist might be referring to people who oppose God’s ways or actively work against the psalmist’s faith. It could also signify those who have turned away from God’s commands or who disregard His teachings. The psalmist’s distress stems from the fact that their enemies have forsaken the very foundation of truth found in God’s Word.

A Cause for Concern:The psalmist’s concern for their enemies’ forgetfulness of God’s words reveals a compassionate heart. It reflects a desire for others to experience the same blessings, wisdom, and guidance that come from a life rooted in God’s Word. It highlights the psalmist’s recognition of the spiritual danger and loss that results from disregarding God’s commands.

  • Zeal for God’s Word:We should cultivate a passionate and fervent love for God’s Word. It should become a central focus in our lives, transforming our thoughts, actions, and attitudes.
  • Commitment and Devotion:The psalmist’s zeal is an example of wholehearted commitment and dedication to God. We should strive to prioritise His Word and seek to live in accordance with His commands.
  • Concern for Others:The psalmist’s concern for their enemies serves as a reminder to pray for those who have forgotten or turned away from God’s Word. We should have a compassionate heart, desiring others to experience the blessings and truths found in Scripture.
  • Importance of God’s Word:This verse underscores the vital role of God’s Word in our lives. It is a source of guidance, wisdom, and truth. Neglecting or forgetting God’s Word can lead to spiritual loss and separation from His will.

As you reflect on Psalm 119:139, consider how you can apply these principles to your own life. May it inspire you to deepen your love for God’s Word and share its life-transforming message with others.
