Psalms 132:11

Listen to this article

“The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.”

Historical Background:King David, the author of this psalm, had a deep desire to build a permanent temple for the Lord in Jerusalem. However, God revealed to David through the prophet Nathan that it would be his son, Solomon, who would build the temple (2 Samuel 7:12-13).

God’s Sworn Oath:In Psalm 132:11, David reflects on the promise God made to him, which is known as the Davidic Covenant. This covenant, established in 2 Samuel 7, includes God’s commitment to establish David’s lineage forever and to raise up a descendant who would sit on the throne of Israel perpetually.

Faithfulness of God:The verse emphasizes the faithfulness of God. It states that God has sworn in truth to David and will not turn away from His promise. God’s faithfulness is a recurring theme throughout the Bible, and this verse highlights His unwavering commitment to fulfill His word.

Fruit of David’s Body:God’s promise in Psalm 132:11 mentions the “fruit of thy body.” This refers to David’s descendants, specifically the future kings who would come from his lineage. Ultimately, this promise finds its ultimate fulfilment in Jesus Christ, who is a direct descendant of David (Matthew 1:1-16, Luke 3:23-38). Jesus is the eternal King who rules over the Kingdom of God.

Setting upon David’s Throne:God’s promise assures David that one of his descendants will sit on the throne. Initially, this referred to Solomon, who succeeded David as king and built the temple. However, the promise extends beyond Solomon and finds its ultimate fulfilment in Jesus Christ, who is the Messiah and the rightful heir to David’s throne. Jesus’ reign is not limited to an earthly kingdom but extends to an eternal and heavenly kingdom.
